Answer from IS1

What kind of traditional festivals do you have?

In Hungary there are lots of traditional festivals. As there was another question about festivals and in the response our classmates have already written about the two most important ones, Christmas and Easter, we have decided to write about St. Stephen's Day and some unusual festivals which could be more interesting for you.

August 20th, St. Stephen's Day

Every year on 20th August there are celebrations all over the country, because that is St. Stephen's Day, when we celebrate the foundation of the Hungarian State and the new bread is also blessed on this day. Countless programs await both locals and tourists. Besides the state celebrations, there are a wide range of programs in every Hungarian city.

In Budapest, in the capital, there are state ceremonies, a procession throughout the streets of the city, a marching of Military bands and majorettes, a spectacular archery show, a thrilling air race over the Danube, a bread and a wheel festival, and the highlight of the celebrations is the firework display, a dazzling show which can be seen from numerous points in Budapest.

In Debrecen, in another city of Hungary,  a Flower Carnival takes place on this day. The Flower Carnival traces back to the 1910s when a spectacular flower promenade attracted visitors on the main streets of the town. Nowadays flower cars are accompanied by Hungarian and foreign dance ensembles, music bands and art groups to entertain the audience. The procession is traditionally led by Debrecen Majorette Ensemble and Youth Brass band awarded at multiple festivals.

The Busó- Walking  in Mohács

It is an annual celebration of Croations living in the town of Mohács held at the end of the carnival season. The celebrations include parades, dancing and folk music. The most important role is played by the so-called Busós, people who wear traditional masks to scare winter away. According to the legend, during the Turkish occupation in Hungary, the people of Mohács fled from the town to the nearby swamps and woods. One night an old man appeared in the camp and told the refugeesthere that a knight would come and help them on a stormy night but till that time they would have to prepare for the battle by carving some scary masks and weapons. The knight came and led them back to the town, the Turks were so frightened by the noise and the scary masks that they ran away from the town because they thought that demons were attacking them.

Septemberfest

We have decided to write about this not so deeply-rooted, rather new,  recently introduced festival to show how important role traditional meals play in our life. One emblematic program of the festival is stew making or cooking goulash .Goulash is the most famous and most frequently cooked dishfrom the country's rich culinary repertoire. Hungarian cuisine is world- famous, though we must admit that authentic Hungarian dishes are  definitely not for people on a diet. You may find our meals a bit heavy and greasy, however their rich flavour and texture compensate for the too much calorie intake. Pork fat and Hungarian paprika are essential for them. On the other hand, the fertile Hungarian plain and the favourable climate provide excellent conditions for growing tasty vegetables and for raising animals whose meat is savoury. You can make excellent meals from first class ingredients.

In the olden days, before tiled roofs were installed on Lebanese homes, their flat roofs were made of tree branches that were covered with mud. When the change of seasons came, especially winter, the mud would crack and start to leak and would need to be fixed. The owner of the house would call his neighbors for help, Al-Awneh, and the neighbors would gather up on the roof. They would hold hands, form a line and start stomping their feet while walking on the roof in order to adjust the mud.

After a while, Al-Awneh came to be known as daloonah, a form of improvised singing and dancing the dabke. A durbakke, a nay and a mijwiz were added in order to keep the men going in the cold weather (it helped stimulate the blood pressure to produce more energy). As time passed, the dabke dance came to be known as one of Lebanon's most famous traditions. Today the dabke is performed in every Lebanese household. The dabke is made livelier when friends and families gather around the Lebanese mezze with arak or wine and begin to perform this dance.

Pivate Ceremonies and Festivals:

Wedding engagements are usually organized in bride's home. The groom prepars lots of presents. There is a big party going on.

Lebanese wedding can last for up to three consecutive days. The most impressive is the day of Zaffeh. Nowadays this term means wedding celebration in general. The wedding starts with two parties – one in groom's home and one in bride's home. With the arrival of groom to bride's home the third party starts. There is lot of food. Everybody's dancing. The party lasts till dawn.

When the bride and groom are leaving the bride's home women gathered give them blessings. The "Ah Weeeee-ha", and the "zalghouta" can be heard. These are joyous sounds made by people at local weddings. As sign of joy people throw petals and rice on the bride and groom.

After the wedding, the groom's family invites the bride's family for a big lunch or dinner. After that dinner, the bride's family invites them back. All in all more opportunities to have a good time.

One more wedding related detail. If the bride steps on single girl's foot it is believed that it'll bring her luck and that she's going to marry soon.

Arabic weddings are often accompanied by very traditional or religious style music, often with dancing as well, such as the dabkah, a typical Arab folk dance that is practiced in many countries, with only slight variations. In the dabkah, the men generally drape their arms over one another's shoulders and dance in a pattern.

Traditional music is performed. Musicians use musical instruments like derbake (a small drum made of clay with goat skin on its top), nay (long bamboo flute) and "mijwiz" (short double barreled flute).

Lebanese "Fatoush"

Lebanese "Mezza"

Lebanese Taboule and Falefel

Open Festivals:

Each region in Lebanon have its own festival, for example BAALBECK FESTIVAL Baalbeck "Heliopolis", the City of the Sun, is considered one of the wonders of the ancient world. The Baalbeck International Festival is the oldest and most prestigious event in the Middle East. The Festival is an annual event which takes place in the Roman Acropolis during the two months of July and August each year.

Only the dancers  wear special colorful clothes.

In Baalbeck festival they serve a special food called :Sfeeha Baalbakieh”which is a mix of bread and diced meat with some kind of pepper, this food is related to this region.

In Baalbeck they are known by their own way of dancing “Dabke” as they perform it in a special way different from each region in Lebanon even this dance is a traditional Lebanese dance accompanied by “Tabel”a round music instrument like Drums but hold vertical way.

Moreover, music festivals, often hosted at historical sites, are a customary element of Lebanese culture. Among the most famous are Byblos International Festival, Beiteddine Festival, Batroun Festival, and Tyr Festival. These festivals are promoted by Lebanon's Ministry of Tourism.

In addition, the annul Fete de la musique , held in late June , brings the whole country out for organized and spontaneous underground concerts.

Also, the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music is the heart of the classical music world in Lebanon, and home to both the Lebanese Ntional Symphony and the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music.

Musical instruments

One popular instrument used in Lebanese music is the lute

Clothes :

Morocco is a rich country in terms of history, traditions, people, culture, religion, climate, geography and so forth. Every one of these aspects of the country influences how Moroccan people are dressed. Among the variety of clothes in Morocco, we find the djellaba and kaftan, two fine garments that speak of the luxurious clothing style of the country. The kaftan refers to the Moroccan garment that looks like the djellaba but without a hood. The origins of the kaftan go back to the Ottoman Empire, as it was one of the finest Ottoman clothing worn by the elite. Like other garments, it has gone through changes over the years.

Food:

The main meal is usually eaten at midday. The typical meal begins with a series of hot and cold salads, followed by a tangine. Bread is eaten with every meal. Often a lamb or chicken dish is next, followed by couscous topped with meats and vegetables.

A cup of sweet mint tea is commonly used to end the meal. It is common for Moroccans to eat using the fingers of their hand, and use bread as a utensil.

Other famous Moroccan dishes are Pastilla (tasty filled savoury pastries) and Harira (soup), this is considered as a dish in itself and is mainly served with dates especially during the month of Ramadan.

The music of Morocco ranges and differs according to the various areas of the country.

Andalusian classical music : It probably evolved under the Moors in Cordoba, and the Persian-born musician Ziryab is usually credited with its invention. Ziryab invented the nuba, a suite which forms the basis of al-âla, the primary form of Andalusian classical music today, along with Gharnati and Malhun.

Chaabi الشعبي (popular in English) is a music consisting of numerous varieties which are descended from the multifarious forms of Moroccan folk music. Chaabi was originally performed in markets, but is now found at any celebration or meeting.

Ukrainians have rich traditions and of course they are connected with their religion or history. One of the most popular is celebrating Christmas. We celebrate Christmas on 7th January. On Christmas Eve it is a tradition for people especially young to go from house to house and to sing Christmas carols. The hosts consider it to be a great honour and give them treats. The coral singers leave wheat seeds wishing prosperity in this way. The coral singers are dressed in fancy national costumes. The traditional Christmas Eve table is presented by 12 vegeterian dishes .

For Christmas carols the mail instrument is the violin.

Another popular festival is celebrating the pagan holiday Ivan Kupala Night which is on 7th June. On this day the girls make wreathes and put them into the river and watch what side on the river it will go that will be the side where the girl's boy-friend will come from. At night the girls go to the forest to look for the fern flower. The one who will find it will be happy in marriage. At night young people jump over the bonfire. In pagan times it was believed the fire will vanish evils. For this festival the main instrument is  the pipe.

In South Africa we have a variety of festivals,

Some great and some not so great but in every festival

A lesson is being learnt by everyone.

Here’s a list of some you might find interesting:

FNB Dance Umbrella:

A festival of contemporary and dance, the FNB Dance Umbrella presents work ranging from community-based dance troupes to international companies.

Prickly Pear Festival:

A day of traditional food such as ginger beer, pancakes, potjiekos, homemade jam, a spit braai (barbeque), and bunny chow.

Lambert’s Bay Kreeffees:

Kreef is Afrikaans for Crayfish & fees is Afrikaans for festival or feast.

At the Kreeffees, held every March in the West Coast town of Lambert’s Bay, you’ll fest on fresh crayfish and get festive at rock concerts by some of South Africa’s favourite musicians.

The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras:

The Knysna loerie is a green bird, but the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras is different. A gay festival held in the beautiful coastal town of Knysna in May, the Mardi Gras offers four days of entertainment for anyone to enjoy.

(a)

As a matter of fact we do but it entirely depends on what the festival is about for example if it’s a festival for gay people obviously the clothes are going to be based on how gay people wear. And if it’s about dance then it will either be formal or dancing gear.

(b)

Again it also depends on what the festival is about like the Prickly Pear festival where pudding is served and the Lambert’s Bay Kreeffees where different kinds of differently cooked crayfish is served.

(c)

Offcourse! There’s a variety of music and dance. There are live concert’s you can enjoy and sometimes the festival just turns into a fun and entertaining parade .Local and international music can be enjoyed an danced.

These are some pictures of the the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras gay festival and the FNB Dance Umbrella.

These are pictures of the Prickly Pear festival and the Lambert's Bay Kreeffees.

We hope you have learnt something from this answer and we hope you might consider joining us for one or all of them.

Answer from IS8

“What kind of traditional/national festivals do you have?” you ask me. And I answer you.

We have a lot of holidays in our country. The most famous  among them is the New Year, Christmas, Old New Year, Easter, Independence Day. Feast Old New Year is also called holiday of Malanka and Basil. I'll tell you about this festival, because it reflects our national culture.

The festival of Malanka is celebrated jn the New Year's Eve (December 31, Old Style, 13 January a new Style), still it is called Generous Evening or Generous (Second) kutey. The festival of Basil is called Old New Year and celebrated on January 1, old style (14 a new style).

Schedrivka's companions go in carnival costumes with music in twilight through the village. The groups of guys maskers, groups of girls go separately.

Among the most frequent images of maskers are Malanka, Basil, goat, grandfather and grandmother, Roma, bear, crane, cat ... Malanka was a guy in a skirt, brows and eyes were covered with soot, the face was bleached with chalk, cheeks and lips were stained red with beet. She liked to kiss everybody she met and coat them with her "makeup".

Goat was a guy, he turned inside out his fur coat, horns were from slingshot, he fastened two boards (mouth) and a piece of hemp as a beard. The opening and closing mouth was popping. This scared children. Between the horns there was a bell, to the back - a tail with a broom.

Strong guys were dressed into bears. Their costumes were fur coats turned inside out, to the feet fasten bundle of straw, hay, or skin sheep. Made from hides and masks. Crane was a guy on stilts, or with a long neck, which was made of the stick.

On holiday Malanka and Basil there was a table full of dishes, which were dominated by meat dishes and baked breads "Malanka" and "Basil".

It was New Year's night, when the goddess of fertility escaped from the realm of the dead, but God vegetation had not yet lost the human shape, they can marry. From their sacred marriage of well-being depends on the earth, fertility of plants and the fertility of animals. This marital relationship represent ritual breads Malanka and Basil, who on New Year's night to lie on holiday table with each other, under the protection of magical attributes - garlic, hemp families, metal coin.

So the wedding Malanka and Basil is the beginning of the New Year, begins a new life, the awakening of nature.

Question A

The Kaape Se Klopse

One of the national festivals celebrated in South Africa is called the Kaape Se Klopse; this event takes place every year on the first three days of the year in the streets of Cape Town. This event marks the one day of the year that the slaves were granted by their masters. People that attend this festival wear very colourful suits and facial makeup; many of them also carry colourful umbrellas on the day. It is mostly Coloured people that participate in this festival. There is a lot of dancing and singing at this event which was first inspired by the minstrel troupes that visited the Cape in the 1880s, they marched and danced through the streets to music of banjos, tubas, guitars and whistles. Some of the foods that they eat are all different types of food and not any particular kind.

The Durban July                                                                                                                                      One of the national festivals that we participate in as South Africans is the Durban July which is held annually on the first Saturday of July in the beautiful city of Durban. This festival is a combination of thoroughbred horse racing and the history of high fashion and elegance. There is first-class food, champagne and a wide selection of music at this event every year. Knowledge of horse racing is not a requirement to have a fun and exciting day out, the show is opened to everyone.
